Spanish pronunciation tips
January 27, 2014

One of the main reasons to study Spanish is to be able to communicate with other people, and the first thing we need to learn to star a conversation is to introduce ourselves. Here you can find a Spanish introductions video. You will learn some basic greetings and farewells, as well as how to ask and answer personal information (age, address, etc.). It is a very practical video from the series ‘Hola, ¿qué tal?’, by the prestigious Instituto Cervantes.

Here’s some of the the sentences you will find in the video:

SALUDAR – Greetings

–        ¡Hola! — Hello!

–        ¡Buenos días! — Good morning!

–        ¿Qué tal? — How are you?

–         Muy bien, gracias. — Very good, thank you.

INFORMACIÓN PERSONAL – Personal information

Informal style, using ‘Tú’

(In Spain, we use tú when we talk to young people or friends/family of any age).

–        ¿Cómo te llamas? — What’s your name?

–        Me llamo Laura. ¿Y tú? — My name is Laura. And yours?

–        ¿Cuántos años tienes? —  How old are you?

–        Tengo 32 años. — I’m 32 years old.

–        ¿Dónde vives? — Where do you live?

Formal style, using ‘Usted’

(In Spain, we refer to senior people that we don’t know using the formal form. We use it also to talk to our boss or professor if it’s a quite formal environment).

–        ¿Cómo se llama (usted)? — What’s your name?

–        Me llamo Julio Muñoz. — My name is Julio Muñoz.

–        ¿Cuántos años tiene? — How old are you?

–        Sesenta y cinco (65). — 65

–        ¿Dónde vive? — Where do you live?

–        En la calle de la Paz, 69. — 69 Paz Street.

–        ¿Es usted el señor Muñoz? — Are you Mr. Muñoz?

–        Sí, soy el señor Muñoz. — Yes, I am Mr. Muñoz.

FAREWELLS – Despedidas

–        ¡Adiós! — Good bye!

–        ¡Hasta luego! — See you later!

Now watch the video Spanish introductions video  and try to answer the question made at the beginning. You can post the answer in the comments field of the blog!
