Are you traveling around Spain and want to party, meet new people and practice Spanish? You will probably need some LGBT vocabulary in Spanish. Whether you are gay, lesbian, trans, straight, or bisexual, here are some vocabulary tips to help you communicate!
So take a look at the following table to find out some popular LGBT vocabulary in Spanish. You will find some of the most common words and expressions that the gay community use to talk about themselves in Spanish, and mostly in Spain. You won’t find most of them in a dictionary, since it is slang, informal terms that are mainly used inside the LGBT community.
As you might know, Spain had a terrible past of systematic violation of gay rights back in the 60’s and 70’s. Luckily, things have changed a lot in the last decades, until the point that most people would agree that Spain is nowadays one of the most open places for the LGBT community. It was the 3rd country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. In many Spanish cities, especially Madrid and Barcelona, there are a lot of gay and gay-friendly stores, bars, cafés, and clubs.
So, whether you are gay or not, if you live in Spain or if you are traveling there soon, you shouldn't leave the country without visiting the Eixample (aka Gayxample) in Barcelona, or the famous neighborhood of Chueca, in Downtown Madrid, among others.
